How to make a GIF?
I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum or the multimedia forum but this seemed the more appropriate place.

I have a video I would like to take a small GIF out of and was curious how it is done. Just want to take a 3 second clip and turn it into a small GIF to use as an avatar. Does it require expensive software or is there freeware that can do it? The video is in AVI format with a divx codec if that matters at all.

I have never done it with video, only jpeg files.

I would think you need to extract the frames from the AVI you want to use for the gif, then convert those single frames to a gif. Two different programs to do this.

Here are some older free gif maker programs

I think you would have to pay for something more sophisticated.

I have never tried it but I found a web site that will let you upload a video file that will be converted to an animated GIF for you:

Thats fine if you want them to have your video file to be used as they wish on the web. Once you upload it, it belongs to them.

I'd use Photoshop .. It might be a little tricky to resize it for Avatar rules.
Here at TSG ...
Supporting members can use 65x65 pixel Avatar @29.3KB max
And guest members can use 50x50 pixel Avatar @19.5KB max
This usually limits the number of frames you can have.

i use

firefox with the downloadhelper add on. to get the video.

then convert it to .MOV file using Movavi Video Converter
http://www.movavi.com/videoconverter/

then use photoshop cs4 to make the .GIF

Tip: when you click on import video frames to layers. and when the window pops up. you must type in *.* in the file name. to get the video or a .gif to show
