Photoshop displays brown instead of grey!
Hey everyone, I've been having a really odd issue that has me and everybody else I show stumped.. I'll try to put in as much detail as I can!

In Photoshop, with any document open all of my greys come up showing as browns!

When I choose the eye dropper tool, and take a sample out of anything that is grey (including the empty window space) it comes up in a shade of brown..

Any white to black colour codes I type in, it comes up a shade of brown..

Here is a screenshot of me using the filler tool after sampling the grey empty space:

Here is a screenshot of my colour settings, I've gone through and changed to every single one in each drop down and it's all stayed the same!

When I save the document as a JPG they look as they should, when I do "Save For Web" it displays the greys properly! It is ONLY when I have it open in Photoshop to work on that it displays odd.. Any JPG I download from the web and open in photoshop has a brown look to it (the greys).. But if I open the same pictures NOT in Photoshop they display fine!

All websites and everything else do NOT have this issue, any images or anything else not in photoshop do not have this issue too!

So can anybody please shed some light on this?

I'm using a standard Dell Optiplex 760 computer, Dual Dell 2009W 20" monitors and Windows Vista..
It is a work computer, my old machine died so they gave me a random new machine they got in to use instead.. Everything worked fine on my old computer.. Hell, it even had the exact same hardware and software set up (as far as I am aware) as this new machine!

I am having this issue in ONLY in Photoshop CS3.. Illustrator and any other piece of software on my machine seem to display fine..

Unfortunately that isn't it, because if you take a look at my colour picker window on the right of this screenshot, you'll see that the colours are browned.. Even the HEX/HTML colour code thing says #ababab which we all know is a grey not a brown shade!

So it isn't it picking a brown colour from elsewhere, it's the whole display coming up brown

I'll admit that I don't understand completely how color profiles work.
Maybe this article will help:http://www.rumblingskies.com/blog/?p=46

Also, check for any profiles that your monitor may be using:

I don't think it would be related to a colour profile as then all greys would come up brown.

OP does this happen with all greys/colours? or is it just that specific shade?

I think you are using the wrong color profile.

Press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) and click Photoshop to open it. Then reply YES when asked if you want to delete Photoshop Preferences.

The shortcut didn't work, should I find the colour profile settings files on the computer and move them to see if that'd change anything?

They totally confuse me haha.. I just opened up the monitor colour profile settings, and it was all mumbo-jumbo to me.. There were a heap of different profile titles and options, and I have no idea which would associate to documents open in Photoshop! So I just closed it, I don't think that'd be it.. Although I have no idea!

When(IF) you install drivers for your monitor, sometimes they install a 'Color profile'. These don't always work 100%. To properly calibrate your monitor you need expensive equipment. The default Windows color management may work better than an installed profile. Go into 'Color Management' again and under devices, select your monitor. What does it show as the profile being used? (I don't have Vista at present, so I don't know the exact view.)

If there is a profile, Photoshop will use it. Most other editors won't. Internet Explorer won't.

On the first picture, you will see that the color profile 2009W_VGA.ICM is set as default.

sRGB IEC61966-2.1 is the default vista color when none are specified. (2nd)

On the first picture, click 'Use My Settings for this Device', click 'Add'. In the list, choose sRGB IEC61966-2.1. With sRGB IEC61966-2.1 highlighted, click 'Set as Default Profile'.

Alternately, you could remove 2009W_VGA.ICM.

See if there is any change in Photoshop. You can always change it back.

I know you want to find out what it is but have you tested it with another monitor?

I have dual monitors, and it's the same on both! I'm just so lost as to why it is only open documents inside of Photoshop?!

I haven't grabbed any other monitors and plugged them in though if that's what you mean?
