Angry Adobe PS CS4 Panning problems
Posted this problem months ago, but no solution. Figured I'd try again, just in case.

Using Adobe Photoshop CS4. When I use the selection tool, brushes, etc. and move the curser too close to any side of the image: about 1/2" from the sides, the image automatically starts to pan. I do NOT want this feature turned on, but have not found out how to shut it off. It is NOT "flick panning". Other people I've spoken with hate this feature as well and have no idea how to shut it off.

Tried contacting Adobe, but can never get through. (After waiting half an hour EVERY TIME on hold waiting for customer support before I get tired and hang up or my phone battery dies. Does Adobe even have customer support????? Or is it just a fake number???? Worst customer support I've seen from over a couple dozen programs I use. Can't even email them.)

Can anyone help me? This has been going on for several months now and I'm ready to wipe this CS4 and reinstall PS7.

Thanks.

I use CS4. I assume this happens when the image is larger than the work area.

I have flick panning unchecked and the auto pan feature works the way I would expect it to. When I get to the very edge of an image it starts to pan...the futher away from the edge I go the faster it pans...

I get no panning with brushes

That's exactly it. Much of the work I do involves zooming in very close, Personally, I prefer to pan the image manually using the hand tool and turn off all auto-panning functions. CS4 seems to have no information on how to do this. Other programs I use have the option to shut off auto-panning. I believe earlier versions of PS do the same, unless I'm mistaken.

Waited for over 2 hours on hold to finally speak with an Adobe rep, but even though we are registered with them and they have us on file AND I was confirmed, because I couldn't find the CS4 case with the ENTIRE serial number, he refused to answer this one question. (Why would they want it again??? Or do they require it every single time?) NOT very happy. The web site did not help either.

Can the auto-panning be shut off?

Unfortunately I am using CS2, but it may be that you need to change the pointer from standard to precise to correct your problem. Go to Pointer Preferences and see if there is anything there to help.

Cool CS4 Panning problem not solved
Posting a new thread since some kind of glitch prevents me from posting on my original thread. (The "Reply" link keeps redirecting me to Log in..... over and over again. Very annoying.)

CS4 panning issue not solved. All I wish to do is to shut the "auto-panning" off, so when I am zoomed in, the image stays put and does not pan off when I am working on it. (And "NO" changing the curser to "precise" has nothing to do with it. Perhaps I need to explain the situation better.)

This is what happens: in steps.

First I zoom in close on a particular spot on an image I am working on. Then I take one of the selection tools or the eraser or paint brush tool. As I work on the image, IF I go a little too close to any edge of the window, the image moves or "pans" to the opposite side. Sometimes slow. Sometimes fast.

PS7 has the decency to only have this happen when using the Marquee tool. NOT the lasso, eraser or brush tool. Somehow the writers of CS4 thought it would be a good idea to have the auto-panning work with several tools. (Perhaps it would be a BETTER idea for them to consult with actual graphic designers before coming up with such brain storms.)

If you work with Photoshop CS4, you probably know what I mean. If not, you'll just be guessing. For many I know who use the program, they all find this "auto panning" feature a pain in the a** and no one seems to know how to shut it off. And many of us have tried.

And Adobe Tech support refuses to help because even though we've registered our company and software with them and are "supposedly" hooked up with their tech support. Why? Because we can't find the original case because someone managed to lose it.

Trust me! You get FAR better tech support here than anything Adobe has to offer and without the 2 hours of waiting on hold and BS. (Only called about 3 times in the past few years. Twice hung up after waiting over 45 minutes on hold. Last time decided not to hang up and waited over 2 hours. And received NO help whatsoever. Not impressed.)

Anyway, if anyone knows how to shut off the auto panning, it would be appreciated.

As I said in my original post...and I'm not guessing... I use CS4 and the marquee tool is the only tool that pans.

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

As a wild guess/shot have you tried resetting your preferences?

Hey wowzer! Yeah, all the prefs are re-set.

Mind you, I just had a thought. My computer at home is a pc, but the one I use at work is a Mac. (Guess I should have mentioned that. Sorry.) On my Mac, CS4 does that stupid pan thing with several different tools. My PS7 at home only does the pan thing when using the marquee tool. I'm assuming your version of CS4 is for pc as well?

Perhaps it's a Mac CS4 issue??? If it is, then that would explain it since there are SEVERAL other glitches and issues with Adobe that only the Mac versions seem to have such as shutting down unexpectedly, freezing, etc. Weird since the prior versions seem to run so well.

What do you think?

My version of CS4 is indeed for a PC.

I also have a Mac laptop with CS4 on it that a friend has at the moment.
I'll call her and get her to try the panning deal.

Thanks wowzer! I know all our Macs at work have the same probs with CS4. When you spend so much money on software, one would actually expect the newer version to be at least as reliable as the older version. Thinking bout wiping out CS4 and going back to CS3. Even the new Illustrator is substandered compared to the older version. Not Adobe's best moments.
