Solved: Photoshop + Remove Red Eye = monster file size?
Good morning everyone,

I have some pictures of my son that I took on a Kodak EasyShare V1233 that came out with some severe red eye. They average 1.6 - 1.9MB on my hard drive fresh off the camera.

When I go to fix this in Photoshop CS3 (just using the red eye tool, no other alterations) and then Ctrl+S to save, the file ends up inflating to 4+MB!

Now I'm saving it at the highest quality setting which is 12, but I don't want to have to sacrifice image quality just to remove redeye.

Is there any way to get in, fix redeye, and save the file without inflating the size so much or having to sacrifice image quality?

what happens if you just load and then save with a new name
possible it may increase file size - just by taking into photoshop and saving again.

Also I have not used the redeye fix in Photoshop - but does it create a new layer
you could try to flatten the image before saving .

Hey etaf, thanks for the response.

Great idea just opening and saving. The results were file size expansion.

Original file: 1.63MB
Saved under a different name: 3.43MB

That's with no changes whatsoever. When the save dialog box comes up there's an option for "ICC Profile: sRGB....." which I thought might make a difference, but I saved it once with that box checked and once without and in each case the file size is 3.43MB.

What is it about simply opening the file in photoshop and saving it that causes such a file size expansion?

Also, the red eye fix does not create a new layer.

No idea why... if its highest quality to start with....

But my files 5-6MB went to 24MB from a 35mm scannned negative

Insanity!

Well thanks for offering your thoughts. I'll leave this unsolved in case someone else comes along with any ideas.

I appreciate the help!

Just a thought

Is the original .jpg ?

Are you saving as .jpg or .psd ?

In CS4 if I open a full size jpg from my camera then save as a jpg at 12 quakity the file size stays basicly the same.

If I save as a psd...which is an uncompressed format... the file size incresses about as you are saying.

No I'm saving it as a JPG.

Maybe it's just time for me to upgrade!

indeed strange

I have CS3 somewhere... I'll load it and try when I get a minute

By the way... the upgrade to CS4 has a few nice feature but questionable if it's worth the price

I didn't think it was worth it personally but I can probably get my company to make the purchase for me if I really push and plead

Thanks for the help!

I'll probably end up doing something like this if it comes down to it.

With the size of hard drives and cost of memory these days I'm not too worried about it, but I am baffled at what's going on.

This explains jpeg compression ... But what's interesting is the Chart found in here .. And attached below.
From this chart .. I'm thinking that a quality setting of about 10 will achieve a significant file size reduction without a significant loss in quality.

I'm still using CS2 ... Didn't see anything in CS3 >4 that interested me.
The numbers you've mentioned haven't made sense to me .. or that I can repeat.
I'm thinking it has to be a setting somewhere.

Thanks for the info Noyb!

I suspect a setting somewhere also but this irritates me just enough to inspire but a post, but not quite enough to spend time walking through every setting!

Appreciate the response

After a red eye fix ... I'd have to save this at a quality of about 9 to get the original file size of ~~ 1.8MB

I normally use Irfanview ... but somewhere I've seen a viewer that would tell me the quality that the original picture was saved in.
I can't find it .. Anyone know what that viewer was ???

Are these numbers what you are seeing ???
