Just bought a used scanner and having trouble
I just bought a used Epson Perfection 2400. I've tried installing the software as a download from their website and couldn't get it to work. So I tried the disk that came with it. The Smart Panel icon loads up on my desktop, but when I click it I get a message that it can't initialize because "lsm.dll not found". The question is, how can I get this file and how can I get it to be found by the program?

I use an Epson V500. Ran a search for "lsm" in the my XP windows directory. Doesn't exist and isn't in the registry. Checked two other XP installations, and no lsm.dll on those either. There is an lsm.exe in my Vista laptop.

What OS is your PC?

Maybe there is something in the Epson FAQ for this product that will help.

Os
What operating system are you using. I can tell you that if it is XP 64 or Vista 64, you will not get that scanner to work without buying a scanner program that will work on your system because Epson does not have a 64 bit driver available.

XP home version. It's not XP 64.

I have an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner. I checked the Smart Panel directories on my computer and found that the file Ism.dll (the "I" is a capital "eye" not a lowercase "ell") is in the ...Program Files\Smart Panel\ and the ...Program Files\Smart Panel\Convert directories, where it was put when the Epson CD loaded the scan driver, software, and electronic manuals.
I realize my scanner is a different model, but I think the Smart Panel and its requirements should be about the same.
I'm running XP Pro SP3 (32 bit, not 64).

You'd think it would be on the cd I have as well then---but I've tried both installing from the cd, and downloading from the Epson site with the same results. Actually what I think happened is I installed off the cd first, then decided that I should get the updated drivers from Epson's link. Start Panel did work for me one time and then after that, it stopped and I began getting error messages, so I tried to uninstall everything, then reinstall just off the disc to see what would happen, and it didn't work after that either. I'm able to scan though, I found out, by going into my photo program, clicking File, and selecting the scanner from there. I just don't know if I'll have all the options available by using that method that I would have by using Smart Panel.

How about a System Restore to a time before all this happened and then do a re-install of the CD. I bet ims.dll is also on your PC, but when you did the Epson update, you picked the wrong version and it changed the registry value that tells the PC where to find it. Don't know why the CD version can't unchange it, but maybe they changed the program architecture so the second update added a new value that the first one can't touch.

BTW, now that the name is straightened out, I see my Epson V500 also installed ims.dll to my PC.

If you google ims.dll, you will find a 3rd party site that offers updates for various versions of Smart Panel. If your scanner is in there, that might be another way to get it going. Of course, there is always a manual edit of the registry for the brave.

I am too brave. I have already turned off System Restore, gone into Safe Mode and run a registry cleaner to try and get rid of the left over Epson entries. That really didn't work because some of them just use Ep4964 or something like that and I'm not brave enough to get rid of all the Ep entries. I think I'll try and find the ims.dll somewhere else as you suggested. Thanks!
