I cannot open my newly downloaded pictures
I just downloaded some new pictures from my camera and when I try to open them on my computer it gives me an error message saying it's an unsupported format. The file is there and the size is correct I'm just not able to open it. It's saved as a JPEG and I've tried emailed them back to myself and they do email in the entirety but I'm just not able to open the file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi suanimal, and welcome to TSG.

Are you able to open any JPEG files, like ones that you have previously downloaded and opened with no problem?

Have you looked at the full file names to confirm that they have a .jpg or .jpeg extension?

Thank you for your reply! Yes, I am able to open other previously downloaded pictures without any problems at all. I've looked at the properties and they are saved as: JPEG Image (.JPG). I also looked at one of the pictures I've downloaded previously and they are saved as: JPEG Image (.jpg). Same way minus one is in all caps and the other is in lower case??

If the original problem files are still in the camera, can you preview them on the camera's LCD viewfinder with no problems?

Can you please let us know the brand and model number of the camera and exactly what software you used to download the pictures?

Are you downloading directly from the camera or using a removable memory card and reader?

You might also want to click the "Report" button in your post first and request a move to the "Digital Photography & Imaging" forum. There would probably be a much better chance that some one a lot more knowledgeable than me will read it and have a solution.

Yes I am still able to preview the pictures fine in my camera.

My camera is an Olympus FE-330 8.0 Megapixel and I just used Windows to upload the pictures. I used a removable memory card and reader to do the transfer like I have always done in the past.

I appreciate your help and I will go ahead and take your advice and move this thread to the Photo forum. I was not familiar with this site before posting. Thanks again!

Not sure what to say. I think my wife and daughter each have Olympus cameras but I don't know what models. They have never mentioned any problems reading the memory cards using either Windows XP or Windows 7.

Do the file sizes look about right as compared to previous files you were able to download and open?

I'm assuming you were downloading via USB.
Did you use any downloading software other than windows ??
Are you able to read the mem card and see if you can get them uncorrupted this way ??

Whoops .. Just read post #5
You might try PCInspector on the mem card to see if it can recover them correctly

The files are too large to attach to post in this thread. If the files are not of a personal nature that you don't mind me seeing and you don't mind my knowing your e-mail address, I can send you a private message with an e-mail address that will allow me to receive an e-mail with one of the problem files attached. I can then try to figure out the problem. Let me know if this works for you.

I should be back here in a few hours.

Doesn't look good ... The file looks blank.
Attached is what a normal jpg .. And your jpg look like when reading it in note pad.
Try PCInspector on the mem card.
But I'm thinking there might be a problem in your card reader ..
Can you connect via USB and use the camera ??

Well that's what I was afraid of. And for some reason I can't transfer photos from my camera directly to my computer through my USB anymore. That's why I had to go get a card reader to transfer them.

Well I know it's not my computer because I've tried it both at work and at home and got the same results. It seems like something may have happened to my camera at some point in time because when I have all the pictures open all the older ones are viewable (on my computer) but the recent pics just show a blank screen and say the format is not supported.
