I`m using a Sky+ Box to watch free to air channels so what i`m wondering is if i take out the HDD to use as external storage will i still be able to use the Sky box to watch free to air channels?

Do you own the Sky+ box? If so, you can do what you like. If not, don't take it apart. I doubt it will work without the hard drive since that's probably where the device's software is stored.

I own the sky+ box alright but i`m not paying a sky subscription. I wasn`t too sure whether the hdd was only used for recording or not. I suppose theres only one way to be definitely sure.

If you're not paying a subscription and don't have Sky service, what are you using the box for?

You can still use it for freeview etc.
