Can I use itunes to import music from my home stereo ? I have the wire to hook from my preamp to computer but I can't get any sound into my computer.

are you using the right port on your computer also what sort of soundcard are you using. if you have a creative labs sound card there is a box you can connect your computer to a hifi. ARGOS does one for about £20. have you also checked that your sound card is working properly

Sounds like you may have run your analog pre-amp signal to a digital "Line In" jack.
Is there an analog input on your sound card?
Check the spec sheet. [RTFM applies]
( "Mic In" is analog, but will probably be a mismatch for power and/or impedance.)

What is the output of the pre-amp? what is the input (min/max) of the soundcard?
And- most importantly- are they the same impedance?

pehbond has posted the solution, if you have a power/impedance mismatch.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
