ATI or Nvidia?
Well,

I saw the AMD or Intel thread and thought I should look for an ATI or Nvidia thread. Surprisingly I wasn't able to find one so here goes....

Whats better? ATI or Nvidia? What provides bigger bang for the buck and which has less compatability issues?

Personally I have an AGP ATI 9800 and am looking to upgrade soon. I'm leaning towards an ATI 850XT.

Thoughts and opinions welcomed.

Whats your budget?

I believe Nvidia is now #1 with their cards.

All depends on what you need from the card, my x1300 Pro was abot $100 in December, it is a very good card.

How about a dollar figure, that would narrow it down alot.

ATI vs Nvidia is just like Ford vs Chevy. Some people just have a preference. If you asked me what is the absolute top of the line card and money is no object then it would be fairly easy to give you an answer but that answer would only be good for a few months at most until the next round of cards gets released.

If you want a real world opinion, the best thing to do is say I want to spend between $xxx and $xxx...whats the best card for my money. The reason for this is because the company with the best cards in the $100-200 range does not necessarily have the best cards in the $200-300 range.

You also have to take into consideration what you are doing with your card because a hardcore gamer will evaluate a card differently than someone who is doing primarily video editing.

I would say NVidia, I have a Riva that's still cranking from several years being used by me.

Depends what you want a new card for - ATI and NVIDIA have their respective strengths in terms of rendering capabilities for gaming, and some game engines are optimised to work best with specific chipsets.

The X850 is getting a bit long in the tooth now, so should be cheap (ATI's latest is the X1900).But I've got the mobility X800 in my laptop and it can max-out AA settings for example in Doom 3 and HL2 and give good framerates.

Check out the techie review sites for comparison between cards you're interested in. Many out there but Hexus and Toms Hardware are well respected

What ever card you get if your replace a card just make sure you get all the older card drivers etc off your PC.

See my post here http://forums.techguy.org/windows-95...p-trouble.html on the troubles I had with my PC and then after a couple days of going nuts I found out that the old video card was back in the add/remover and device managerm display had two cards listed.
I did uninstall just the way it said to do it too and both card were NVIDIA too but not all was taken off the PC and it can back and gave me one pain in the rear.
