Question Memory Upgrade or buy new PC?!!?!!!
Hi, can someone plz tell me if it would be worth the time & effort to add more memory to our 3 yr old PC--or should we just buy a new one?!! (Just looking for better speed--it's gotten very slow)
Here's the info :
HP Pavilion 533W
Intel Celeron CPU 2.00GHZ
Purchased new in '03
256 MB Physical Mem.
43.50 MB Available Phys. Mem.
2.00MB Virtual Mem
1.96MB Avail. Virt. Mem

Will adding more memory really help give us the speed we're looking for?? Also, would only adding memory do the trick or would we have to sink a lot of $$ into an upgrade? We've been looking and have found a decent PC for under $800 (brand new) so we aren't wanting to spend much money on an upgrade...

Any help would be greatly appreciated Thx so much!

If it has gotten really slow there could be a number of issues.

what have you done in the way of scanning for spyware? If it has been a while or you have done nothing that could be a contributor to slowness.

Adware
Spybot
Ewido are three i would suggest. run them weekly and keep them updated.

if you do not have them and decide to install be sure you update before scanning.

have you defragged recently? if not try that

have you run disc cleanup or a utility like CCleaner? That can help also

If you go to run and type in %temp% you could see what temp files are there and delete them. note not all will delete sometimes unless in safe mode it seems

With 256mb of ram, it could definitely use more...it's simple to install, and relatively cheap right now.
