bad sound
I have been redoing a computer for my granddaughter, it is a HP Pavilion XT 858. The hard drive was dead so I installed a new 100 gb maxtor with windows xp home edition, no problems there. Everything works fine all the drives ect. except the sound is all garbled and sounds like it is about to die. I've checked everything I can think of, so now any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you load a new operating system, you also have to load the drivers for the motherboard functions such as sound etc.

While Windows provides some basic funtionality, its not always a workable solution.

It appears that the PC originally shipped with Windows 2000, HP do not provide any clue as to Windows XP compatability or any XP drivers.

What they do have is here:

But nothing for XP. Its worth a try to see if the WIndows 2000 drivers would work though. There are a couple of audio drivers there.
