Post Solved: looking at laptops
my brother is looking into getting a laptop and was wondering how this looks:

HP Pavilion dv6000t customizable Notebook PC
EZ796AV
– Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
– Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)
– 15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
– 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
– HP Imprint Finish + Microphone
– 1024MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
– FREE Upgrade from 60GB 5400RPM to 80GB 5400RPM!!
– LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
– 802.11b/g WLAN
– No TV Tuner w/remote control
– 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
– Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
– HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

With a $100.00 notebook isntant rebate the price comes down to $983.99

Is there anything better? He just wants the best bang for his buck kinda deal.

Then, he was also wondering about custom building notebooks, how hard is it? etc. And would the cost be cut down going that route?

Custom building? How?

All notebooks are "unique" to the maker, there is no such thing as a "generic" case, motherboard etc as there is for a desktop.

The only real way to "build your own" would be to buy it as spare parts (all for the same make and model) and "reassemble", could cost about 10 times more than buying one off the shelf.

What does he want to do with the notebook? At 3.1 kG, it's luggable. I personally set a limit at 2.5 kG for anything I buy, but lighter generally means expensive. If you travel, buy light. If you dont travel, buy a desktop?
