JVC picture just went
I was watching TV on my JVC AV-32950 (1998 model) when all of a sudden the TV made a quick "sizzle" noise and the screen just went blank. The sound was fine - just no pic.

I unplugged the set overnight and plugged it back in - still no pic, just sound. I unplugged a couple of cables (A/V - not the cable TV one) and jiggled all the connections I could reach and the pic came back for a few seconds but then fizzled again.

Any ideas what the problem could be? Does this sound like an expensive repair?

Thanks so much!

1998? Time for a new TV. It doesn't sound cheap...

That's what I was afraid of hearing! Oh, well... time to ditch it then.

Thanks so much for your reply!

How big is the TV? 32"? Do you get a vertical or horizontal line, or even a dot in the middle of the screen?

If you're good at soldering, you may just need to replace a transistor or two.

Thanks for your help! Yes, it's a 32". There is nothing but a black screen. I do have a soldering iron and I'm not afraid to use it. : )

Thanks again!

Rule 1 - if you choose to accept this mission: NEVER EVER TOUCH THE BIG RED WIRE! I speak from experience! The dent in my wall across the room is proof.

Rule 2 - Look for any burned components, or any "bulging or venting" capacitors (they look like little coke cans). They will need to be replaced.

Rule 3 - on the underside of the circuit board, look carefully for any solder joints that may be "loose" (look for little "half-moon" breaks where the component from above pokes through the hold in the board.)

Touch them up with the solder iron, and let it cool (a couple minutes is fine), then plug it all back up and test it out!

And worst case scenario is buy a new TV (which you'd have to do anyway...)

OK - I'll call in reinforcements to make sure to pick up the spare parts. : )

Thanks so much!

Well, I never had to take the TV apart after all. I decided to try a couple of knocks on the side and top of the TV (standard repair technique, huh?!) and when that didn't work, I pushed the channel up/down button on the front of the TV, and the picture came back! I've been afraid to turn the set off since then, but I have turned it on and off over the past couple of days and it seems fine. (Hope I didn't just jinx myself.)

Thanks again for you help - I'm saving your instructions just in case!

You can get a spray lub/cleaner for the channel button but you want to get the right type so maybe ask at a repair shop to see if they have any.

Even a set as "old" as 1998 will not have any channel "buttons" that could benefit from a spray/lube cleaner, it will be all membrane type contacts driving a microcontroller.

Ho yea like my remotes and keyboard so your right there will not be anything to spray.
Plus I bet harder to get to and clean because I have open a remote and keyboard to clean.
Button on a remote were sticking after I got coffee on it that had sugar in it so had to clean the top outside of the remote, the buttons that were all in one rubber mat and let it dry and put it back together and all worked ok. But the other parts that were under the mat that really has the contacts that the buttons press to change changes etc were ok.

Without being insulting, if your right in the head Peachy don't even think about going into the back of the TV.
Observe Guru's Rule No1 offering where it blew him across the room.
Or look at this way, a new TV costs less than a funeral.

I didn't have to open up the TV (see previous post) - I don't know what happened, but it works now! : )

Thanks for your input!
