anyone ever use a pc fan to build a hilsch tube
Hi,

I was bored and thinking about pc cooling so wandered across the hilsch tube and thought it would be great.
Now I really don't want to use a compressed air cylinder and thought would it be possible to use a PC fan and a narrowing tube to increase the pressure.

Anyone know if this would create sufficient pressure even for a slight effect?

Don't take this too seriously I think I know the answer and it is partly written in jest.

For cooling computer I had thought about it moons ago as I was involved with their use back in the double knit clothing days. It was used to cool the sewing machine needles in many of the clothing plants (may still be today for all I know). Hot needles melted the double knit and left too big a thread hole. If memory serves me well, it seems these were marketed by the Wilkerson manufacturer and were purchased thru Womack machine & supply.

Depending on size (and there were several available), compressed air consumption could be tremendous. So the cost of a compressor (even one of the cheapo's), + air prep (dryer and coalescing filter to remove water & hydrocarbons) would make it an expensive & PITA operation. This same principle has been used on some electrical control boxes, but not sure of the design. It would probably work well for cooling a tower provide water and oil were contained should filter/dryer fail.

They did work well. It seems the compressed input air temp was 150 +/- a bit and the cold air output was around 32 F. Not sure what the hot side was. Also, don't remember operating air pressure.

And JohnWill answered your question. I don't know of a fan that could develope enough S.P. to accomplish the task thru a venturi (which is the principle behind the hilsch tube).
