New build problem
Hey all,

I've just recently gathered a load of new components to make my new shiny system, and I started to put it together, I started small with the first physical build of it to make sure that it works and that I could install the OS before adding new parts.

I came across two problems when I booted up the system.

1) I booted up the system (all the lights went on and the fans spun) but nothing appeared on the screen. As in No Signal.

2) The Optical drive won't open.

Here are the specs of my system as it stands:

Mobo: Intel D975XBX2
CPU: Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz
RAM: 2x OCZ (OCZ2P800LP2GK) 2Gb PC2-6400 DDR2-800
G/C: Sapphire Radeon X1950 PRO 512MB GDDR3 PCIE Dual DVI 580/700

I won't bore you with the rest right now... I also have a 700w PSU with modular cabling.

The PSU has a 2x10+2x2 rail for the mobo and a 2x2+2x2 rail for the CPU. the mobo has a 2x12 socket for the mobo and a 2x4 socket for the CPU. I have tried plugging in the power with various different combinations to the same effect.

Now before everyone starts mentioning to do the basics, this is what I've already done:

1) Checked the monitor to see if it works.
2) checked the VGA cables and swapped them over for another set just in case.
3) Plugged the G/C into a machine which I know that works, and nice shiny letters appeared on the screen.
4) Plugged a G/C which I know for sure that works into my rig, but still nothing on the screen.
5) Made sure that the G/C and everything is firmly plugged in where needed and working.
6) Booted the system up with only 1 stick of ram installed.

as for the Optical drive issue, there are two identical drives, and neither of them want to work. I've tried using different cables for power and the IDE connection to no avail, and tried using the override poke (as in using a paperclip into the little hole on the front plate) all to no avail. And yes there is a CD in one of them.

I can't think of anything else to do, except take it apart and put it back together.

Has anyone got any tips / suggestions for this issue?

Double check the VGA is seated 100 percent

Does your card need an extra 6 pin power connector?

How did you get a cd in the optical drive in the first place?

Does the optical drive led light go on?

Check the drive for bent pins

TRy the video card out on another system if possible

the Optical drive worked when the system booted up at first, so I put the OS installer disc in to prepare for installation, but when I noticed that there was no signal, I rebooted the machine to see if it would do anything, and since then the drives (both of them) have refused to open, even when it's only one of them plugged in.
The drive's light is on steadily, not flashing or anything.

the Graphics card has already been tried on another rig that works and the card worked perfectly.
The card does require the extra power adapter, and it's connected, but no difference.

A friend of mine has just suggested to me that there may be an issue with the Mob itself, and he suggested that I try using the rig with components that I know work for a fact to see if that does anything.

Also to save everyone from asking, the Mobo does not have an onboard VGA adapter.
