new system i need
my win 98 se gateway is doing okay but i would like to upgrade to a new tech system..i have been told about tigerdirect but from reviews it sound like the plastic holding the thing together is somewhat less than desirable...i am open to any options on where to purchase but i want xp which limits my selection from big box stores...i am looking for a dual core pentium with xp...320 gb or more hd with 2 gig of ram...cd/ dvd player/burner ..decent usb support and good to better sound and graphic's...tiger's systematic has a few that would fit me okay and for a decent price. but i am leary of online spending blind close to a grand not knowing the quality of the product......our tech repair guy at work has a home business and has quoted me a decent price for a decent work horse..i am waiting on the hardware spec's to see what i would be getting for my money....what would you do in my shoes if you had 900 to 1000 to spend....any input welcome and thanks

I just built one. With duoCore Intel and current MoBo you can add about $150.00 to what I spent. All parts bought from newegg and tigerdirect. Most with no freight.

I'm not too impressed with many of the tiger barebones cause they are sometimes shorting quality, be it MoBo, case, RAM or PSU or all four. Have seen some that were good deals, but few and far between. Some of the tiger refurb OEM units are really good deals, but a little short on warranty (usually 90 days).

You can buy online an off the shelf unit from Dell & Gateway (maybe more) with XP in selected systems and probably get it with some extra goodies cheaper than building your own. May be even buy your own XP disk and have your local Fry's, BB or whomever install it in lieu of Vista.
