I would imagine that the hard drive may be salvagable unless she has really gone all out to completely destroy the laptop. If the hard drive is intact, you will be able to remove it from the laptop itself and take it to a local computer shop - they should be able to pull the data off there for you, but they do charge for this service it can be expensive.

Hope this helps, and hope the situation is a little easier for you now (I'm twice divorced, so I know how it goes).

I have had success removing an INTACT hard drive from a laptop and connecting it to my desktop machine to retrieve the data.
If you go to a computer supply store and tell them what you want to do they can help you find the correct cable to run to the motherboard of the desktop machine.
The one I bought was $15.00, much cheaper than having a shop recover the files.
