Cheap Build
Hey folks. I'm checking out stuff from Tiger Direct for a new computer after Christmas. I'm trying to keep it <400. Please let me know what you think-

MSI K9MM-V Motherboard - Qty: 1 $49.99
AMD A64 X2 4000+ 2.10GHz Retail - Qty: 1 $69.99
US Modular 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 - Qty: 2 $74.00
Power Up Mid-T w/450-Watt PSU - Qty: 1 $39.99
Maxtor Ultra 160GB Hard Drive - Qty: 1 $59.99
Lite-On LH-20A1P 20x DVD Burner - Qty: 1 $34.99
EVGA GeForce 7300 GT / 512MB DDR2 / AGP 8x / DVI / VGA / HDTV / Video Card $94.99

Total 381 before rebates. Here's the link for the bare bones package http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=M452-2848%20A

The extra memory and video card are separate.

Think the PSU will suffice? I'm not a heavy gamer, don't have time. But I do like to play games from time to time.

Thanks- Chris

You can do better in a couple of areas, otherwise the machine would suffice. The 450W PSU is quite adequate for your need, even if you added more hardware.

I would look for one with a MB/HDD that has SATA300 and PCI Xpress for the video card vs. the SATA150 & AGP. Should be able to get both in same price range. You didn't mention OS, so guessing you already have a Windows XP or Vista you can use. If not, add another $90 to $200 for OS.

There are going to be a lot of good offers between now and after Christmas, so I wouldn't rush into any decision just yet. ................and, since it's officially December, hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

Thanks for the looks guys, and Merry Christmas!

Wino- are you saying SATA/PCI express because of speed? Just curious. I'll definitely take your advice.

Yea, tiger direct has been having sales daily, I love it

Yes, speed is reason and latest technology, particularly the PCI X if you ever upgrade video. Tiger has a sale on the following now. If I had not just built a new machine would consider it

Man, that is nice...just a little out of my price range. I notice you have a P4. Any particular reason you went that route instead of AMD? Tiger has a lot of deals on PD925 setups...I'm just a little skeptical, probably because I've never owned one.

The P4 is my old build and internet machine. Have a newer AMD Athlon 64x3800 I use in my office/business and just built another AMD 64x2x4400 (start button to complete boot less than 30 seconds)see here that will basically replace and/or enhance the P4. I'm computer poor. Not to mention the two laptop, and another P III 1.8 tower w/Ubuntu Linux, another P4 3.0 that is used for a friends business credit card billing I do for him while he resides outside the USA, another P4 3.0 MediaCenter in my entertainment center. Plus two on the workbench I'm repairing for others.

As an aside, all (except the repairs) these are on their own UPS. Whether the computers are on or not when there is a power failure, the beeping will drive you nuts..........we had a power outage this AM...............glad I was on the way out the door and all well upon return.

Ha You sound a lot like me...I've got a P4 for my Ubuntu, a P3 for my son's game playing, an older AMD that my wife uses, and my laptop. I'll be putting XP Pro on my new machine (already have a copy...and it is legit for the moderators ) as I am deathly afraid of Vista

Here's another issue...once I get mine together my wife will see the whiz bang speed and want a new one, regardless of what she says now So I'm planning for that also-
