HP Button Dropped Inside Case
My power on button dropped inside the computer case and I can't figure out how to fix that. I used to work on my old Compaq and I even added a drive to it, but on this new Hp, I can't figure out how to open it. I have the tools, but I can't figure out how to get inside the shell. The computer is no longer under warranty (of course) and I would imagine it will cost quite a bit to get it fixed. It's so strange. All I did was push it on as I always do and it dropped inside the case. I was watching a new release dvd last night and that's stuck in the drive. This is so frustrating. Any advice? Thank you as always...

You might share the exact model of the computer, HP makes many models.

Model
It's a media 7 something N. I'm not home so I'm not sure. I did find a site that walked you through opening the case so I'll try that and see what I can find. I think if I can get in there and see the problem, I can fix it. I don't think the button is broke off, I think it just came off or came loose from the spring. I'll know more tomorrow. Thanks...

Many times the front bezel will come off the case and expose the buttons, but it varies depending on the case.

I did fix the problem and let me tell you that it wasn't easy. This is a common problem and the part is not available from HP or any computer repair staff that I know of. I took the case off and found the problem. The button is attached to a very thin plastic frame and the framing was broke. To fix it, I used a very thin coat of super glue. I placed the plastic frame on glass and applied a very thin coat of super glue. After the glue was dry, I applied structural epoxy (system 3) in a very thin layer all around the plastic frame and let it dry. Thin layers are key because the frame needs to give. I then reattached the frame and the button to the computer. I put the case back on and everything is working fine now. The structural epoxy can be hard to find. I found it at Woodcrafters. Anyway, this was the only option I had especially after I found out that the part wasn't available. I hope this information helps someone. Liz

JB-Weld will work just as well, and it's readily available.

What is weld? I actually enjoyed the whole process especially when I checked online and others had actually installed a whole different button. If there is an easier way, I'm all for it, but I don't know what you mean by weld. All that comes up in my brain is welding and I know that isn't it considering that the brace for the button is thin plastic. Have a good one!

JB-Weld is a specific product. http://jbweld.net/products/jbweld.php

It's a very flexible kind of epoxy that is not only strong, but you can also sand and file it to shape easily. I find it very handy for a host of repairs.

I actually reattached a broken side mirror on an 81 Cougar with JB weld. It held until the car went to the scrap yard. I was impressed with the goo.
