Another Grand Prix problem...
Hi !
I'm posting a new post for another Grand Prix problem. This forum suggests I got ripped off with a belt tensioner and I don't want to be misslead by the mechanic this time around ! Had my 1998 Grand Prix on the highway yesterday. Felt like it was shifing hard on exceleration, even at high speeds like 55-70 mph. Then it started to make a whine. Not real loud, but definitely loud enough to hear. Got home and it rested for awhile. 3 hours later I went about a 1/2 mile and my oil light came on. There was very little oil showing on dip stick at this point. Oil is faithfully changed every 3 months. It was last changed less than 2000 miles ago. At this point, there were no slipping shifts or whining. Added 2 quarts of motor oil to get home... Any ideas on what might be wring and what I should check first ? I'm a female and of course I don't always trust a mechanic by what they say !
Thanks

No signs of leaks where you park the car?

did you check the fluid level in the transmission?

I could be wrong but suspect the two issues are separate..

Wacor, there are drops where the car is parked, can't say it's real bad, but yes, definitely there. My mechanic can't find any leaks, or signs of, anywhere The transmission fluid level is good, the radiator was flushed about 5 mos. ago. I've been driving it around town and ever since I added the oil, I've not had any problems. Guess I need to get it on the highway and see how it runs.

put a cardboard down where it leaks. and check and see after it collect some of the drips if it is oil. if it is redish it probably is trans fluid.

I've got cardboard under it now, but It absorbs too much to see what it is. I'll put a sheet of plastic down. I was thinking it looked like transmission fluid. What would be your guess if it was transmission fluid ?

The most common issue in my experience is a leaking rear seal on the transmission.

The pan gaskets normally doesn't leak as much as the rear seal while it's sitting in the garage, just when it's actually running and the fluid is moving around. A bad rear seal will leave a puddle whenever you sit somewhere.
