I use my VoIP phone to send my FAX transmissions. I have ViaTalk and get two unlimited lines for $10/month on a two year prepaid plan.

Yes a telephone line is necessary for FAX, but the VOIP mentioned by Johnwill also works and seems inexpensive (I don't have broadband available where I live.)

If your computer/laptop has a Data/Fax Modem and you have a land line telephone, you should be able to send and receive faxes thru XP's fax interface. When you want to send a fax, unplug your telephone and plug cord into computer phone modem (it's rare to have one without a modem). I use mine on ocassion for local area code fax only. My incoming faxes go to a stand alone fax on a VoIP line which I also use to send LD faxes.

I'm going to give you an unqualified.......................MAYBE.

The following is from my cable co.:

Quote:
6. Is Digital Phone compatible with Fax Machines and Dial Up? Digital Phone service supports Fax Machines. Dial Up Internet can work with Digital Phone but not on a consistent basis. It is recommended you retain a second analog line from your current or previous phone company for the purpose of dial up. Time Warner Cable plans to introduce enhancements to Digital Phone in the near future to provide full compatibility with dial up internet.
Q: Will my fax machine work with Digital Phone Unlimited Texas? A: Fax success rates with Digital Phone Unlimited Texas service can be comparable to that of traditional landline service, but performance will vary in different locations. Please contact Time Warner Cable customer service to learn more about fax compatibility in your area.
I suspect if you enter the XP Fax setup wizard in START> ALL PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES> COMMUNICATIONS> FAX, and complete the wizard and it recognizes your cable modem you have it made.

As mentioned, I've used my FAX with two different VoIP services, which is what your phone through the ISP is, so it's likely (though not assured) that it would work.

John - curious - is this stand alone fax or the XP fax program?? I would expect a stand alone fax to work with no problem, but not sure about the XP fax program re recognizing cable phone modem.

Well, I've used a FAX/Modem and two different FAX machines with Vonage, and the FAX/Modem and my current multi-function printer/FAX with my current ViaTalk account, and I have no issues. I will say that occasionally a FAX will error out and retransmit, hard to say what that is, but it doesn't happen often.

Thanks, John. I just realized my thinking is off regarding how cable phone works or is connected. I almost made the change to cable phone service (long story why not) and forgot that I was going to connect thru my existing house phone jacks/wiring, thus the fax modem on my PC is all the XP program would require as all it needs is a phone tone/signal and the cable modem plays no part in the equation other that being the gateway...........................or at least that's what I believe now.

Yep, you need to have a VoIP service to provide the actual phone service, though they're a lot cheaper than the local utility company. I still have a Verizon line, because it came with the bundle of Internet, TV, and phone. However, my secondary line is ViaTalk, I actually get two line capability for $10/mo on a 24 month contract.
