Subwoofer Help
Hey guys, I don't know much about audio equipment but my friend left me with his car subwoofer and amp. I was wondering if there is any chance I could use it in my house instead of in my car. I would appreciate it if you could tell me what hardware I should get a hold of, or let me know if theres no way this is going to work.

Here's what I have:

Receiver

Subwoofer- MTX Thunder 4500

Amp

Thanks!

No problems. To solve this you must have power supply: voltage 12 V - 14 V , current 20 Ampers or more

I found out looking for a fully regulated power supply which converts 120V 15A to 12V to the higher amperages extremely difficult. Even if you were to find a passable power supply, you have a pretty cluggy setup. You're better off just buying a home use power amp like this one:

http://emotiva.com/upa1.shtm

It has more power than the amp you've linked to and you don't have to deal with a Macgyver'd setup.

Also, you're going to have to build a purpose built cabinet for that subwoofer for home use. Car subs utilize the trunk volume as part of what it needs to generate bass. In a home setting, you'll have to translate that overall "cabinet" volume to an actual enclosure and then tune it appropriately for that driver.

My advice, is to just throw the stuff in a car where it's meant to work. If you're looking for a sub for home use there are pre-done packages for not so much money which will yield an overall better result.

zx10guy is right

It will sound bad in your house iv done this before and comparing house amplifiers to car one's is like comparing apples to oranges from a sound quality standard

However you can run it rather cheaply by doing 1-2 things

get a car battery and charger to cycle it

OR... you can convert a PC power supply to a lab power supply but if you do this i would recommend you to just by one powerful enough for the job they are rather cheap like 15-50$. They will supply 20-30 amps of clean power at 12-14 volts and can be converted very easily ,you've just got to find the right 2 wires to jump it if it don't have a power switch on the back and bunch all the same voltage wires together to get better output. Do not do this if you don't have a multi meter because not all the same color wire are the same voltage as iv found out the hard way.

Google ATX powersupply to Lab powersupply
