Solved: All I have is a C:\
Hi Guys,
I have just formatted the hard drive on this old Compaq Presario with just 15 mb of space. All I have now is a c:\

I have tried boot disks available online, but the a: won't read them (non system disk or disk error...replace and strike any key to continue).

it has a d:\ into which i put a Win95 installation disk (it's a licensed copy)...but it won't read it.

When I put a boot disk for DOS 6.22 in the a:/ drive, and asked it to install, it said this program cannot be run in DOS.

I'm at a loss as to how to get a platform onto this machine so I can install an operating system. Thanks in advance for any directions.

If you are installing Windows 98, the you need a boot disk from here.
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
You need to create the bootdisk with the downloads from here. Do not just copy it to a floppy. You have to execute it within Windows and it will prompt you to put in a floppy disc into your floppy drive.

If you are installing XP, then just boot from the install media.

Win98 needs between 140 MB and 255 MB of hard disk space.
Windows 3.1 would fit. It needs 9.5 MB, but 14.5 MB is recommended.

Perhaps they meant they formatted because they only had 15 MB of free space left?
