Unhappy need DOS help
Have a server that will not detect any mass storage devices. Have DOS startup disk, have CDROM driver which I intend to use to run CDROM config. utility so that on bootup machine detects HDD with NT 4.0 installed. Q How in the world do I install a CDROM driver from the command prompt? I have a DOS guide and 2nd PC w/ internet access-lots of resources but am completely clueless. Any help would be very much appreciated. Know of any good sites?

made some headway
As I understand it I need to creat an AUTOEXEC.BAT file in order to load the CDROM drivers. Don't know how to do that tho.

For Win9x (no NT experience, sorry):

A CDROM in DOS requires both its' driver and MSCDEX.
I used lines from my system for the examples below.
The "rem" lines (remarks) are ignored by the system.
I also use a meaningful ID number that reminds me
which CDROM is in this computer...

You must load CDROM drivers from the CONFIG.SYS
file, something like this:
Code:
rem Path to driver and ID number that is also used by MSCDEX
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRIVERS\MAC\CDROM\MTMCDAI.SYS /D:MITS40X
MSCDEX must be loaded from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (or
manually from the command line), something like this:
Code:
rem /M:buffers - /E use expanded mem - /L:drive letter (optional)
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MITS40X /M:30 /E /L:N
Cheers, Mac

If your server's BIOS supports booting from the CD you can boot directly from the NT CD. Change this option to CDROM, C, A and reboot and the setup should start from the CD. If you have the NT installation diskettes you can also boot to them.

Smile Need help with a Game that Runs in DOS mode
Hello

My computer:
Dell Dimension L500c
Intel Celeron Processor
127 MB RAM
OS: Win 98

I hope you can help me. I played a mystery game years ago that I loved. I recently bought it again and forgot that it ran in DOS mode. Though I never really was good with DOS, I got the game to run.

Now, I follow the instructions by shutting down and starting in DOS mode and then type VNM\AFRAID at the C: prompt. Then the instructions say to type AFRAID after that. When I do that I get an error message that says, bad command or file name. Is there a command I need to type before I type the last AFRAID? What do I need to do

Thanks So Much

Find what directory (folder) the game is in
and use cd\ to change to that dir.

For example, if the game is in c:\afraid,

try typing:

cd\afraid

and press enter. That puts you in the directory
where "afraid.exe" (or afraid.com) should be
located. You can then type the instructed game
commands.

If you have no clue where it's located, do this:

Type:
cd\
and press ENTER.

Then type:
dir/s afraid.*
and press ENTER

It should show "Directory of (whatever)" if it
finds the file.

[Edit] OOPS, not paying attention here...
Apparently it's in the VNM dir, so try cd\vnm
and press ENTER first. If that doesn't work, try
the other steps I mentioned to find it.

Cheers, Mac

Smile Thanks So Much Mac
Mac

Thanks for you help. I figured out how to execute the game, but kept getting error messages. So I ran a test that came with the cd and found out though that my video card is not compatible with the game. Its Vesa compatible and I've found a fix. Hope it works.
