You've purchased the MacOS X 10.1 Upgrade CD-ROM. This disc was designed to update MacOS X versions to 10.1. It will not work on previous versions (i.e. MacOS 9, 8, etc.) to upgrade to MacOS X.

I thought this was quite a scam when I bought my copy. Retailers charge upwards of $100 for this pathetic attempt at an upgrade CD. FYI, there used to be a few web sites on the 'net that described a "trick" to making the upgrade CD you have perform as a full upgrade for non-MacOS X systems. The disc you purchased is a full install of MacOS X, it just has a fail-safe to check your existing OS version.
