DOS in WIN98
Small problem...everytime I try to open DOS from the Start/Run menu with ANY type of command I get a DOS screen that flashes up for about two seconds then just disappears and is gone I can't seem to work out what is going on...any help would be appreciated....

Is another window popping over top of it or is it completely closing? If there is a button for it in the task bar you can click on it to bring it back on top.
If not can you access it from start\programs?

Are you running system commands from run or does something like calc do the same thing?

Assuming you're running a pre-Windows 2000 Operating System, goto Start-Run, type "command" (without the quotes), then run your DOS command. If running Windows 2000 or later, Start-Run, "cmd" then your command.
