Old DOS with Windows XP
Want to run an old, old DOS program (IBM File ***'T) that contains an extensive cross referance of my 1600 book library.

Will not run on my new windows xp and so I had my grandson partitition the drive and we put MS 98 on the new partition. When I go to MS 98 and go into the DOS mode and I put the floppy in "A" slot the result is "general failure reading drive A Abort, Retry, Fail" . In some instances with other old dos programs I get a message of "disk is not formatted". I had been running the the old DOS disk on a computer with DOS 95 on it but it is hard to believe that a DOS program that would run on MS 95 would not run on DOS 98.

We tried to partition the hard drive with a section on DOS 95 instead of the 98, but the program he was using seemed to prevent this.

Would appreciate any help we can get on this problem.

Hi patzer, and welcome.

I think you have a couple of things working against you.

1.) I think your floppy drive isn't compatible with the one that created the floppies. That happens sometimes and one way around it is to E-mail the file from the old computer to the new one and then create a new floppy on the new computer that it will be more fond of. Or...You could try making another floppy, sometimes a different one will work for some strange reason.

2.) I think XP may be able to run that dos program if you will try it in win95 or win98 compatibility mode. To do that, create a shortcut to the programs executable and view the properties of that shortcut. It will give you the options (pif) needed to let XP emulate a win95 or win98 system and attempt to run that program

Good luck.
