Re: Upgrading from OS 8.6
I bought an IMac that has 8.6. Since this was my first Mac, I know hardly anything about the operating systems. I would like to run something newer. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

That's what I'm using. Which iMac do you have? Upgrading to OS 9.2 shouldn't be a problem. But if you want to go to OSX, it will depend on how much memory and HD space you have. Speed of processor can come into play too.
Mine is a 333mHz. w/160 mb of ram and 6 gig HD. It's kinda useless for me to try to go to OSX, because it requires so much memory and HD space. They say it will run on 128 mb ram. It will, but very slow. They SUGGEST a minimum of 256 mb. My iMac will max out at 256 mb. You still need plenty of memory left to run your other programs. Internet browsers like plenty of memory allotted to them. Graphics programs DEMAND a lot of memory to perform half way decent. PhotoShop is a memory hog!
If you have a newer iMac, you may have no problem going to OSX. But, before you start an upgrade to 9.2 or X, you will need to do a firmware upgrade. You can download that. Go to www.apple.com and go to the download site from there. Good luck!

Does anyone have a link to a download page for the firmware update?

I have looked at several apple websites, and it's not very clear which update u should be downloading when upgrading to os 9 from os 8.6. Everythings OSX orientated now.............

Sorry for budging in there....;-)

Go here and browse through the pages. Someone has probably asked and got an answer. Or, at top of page, do a search for firmware upgrade.............
Good luck!

There were also certain iMacs that were not compatible with OSX, the very subject of a recent class-action settlement in California. You might check to see if your model of iMac is one that is incompatible with OSX first.
