Surface scan
Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble on my HP notebook, on the hard disk. I'm trying to get, through DOS, to do a surface scan. I'm not sure of the syntax - and I keep getting all the other tests before that - and it doesn't succeed in passing the directory structure and file system tests. (Works for HOURS, and then says it didn't succeed.) I'm looking for the syntax to do the surface scan directly, without doing the other tests first.
I have WIN98, sec edition, and original CD's: Win98, HP Recovery System, Norton SystemWorks 2000.

thanks for your help.

Hi Larry

If you are using the command Scandisk C: then the directory is scanned and the system trys to repair the drive before you can do a surface scan. It sounds like your drive is dying. I suggest going to the manufacturers of your hard drives web site and downloading their test diagnostic to test your hard drive.

Yes but it still checks the directory and other things first. You just dont get the prompt about running a surface scan.

"Performs a surface scan after other checks ."
