Makes me kinda ill!
Why won't people let us know if our suggestions help them or not?
I'd like to know whether or not to suggest the same thing, to someone else with a similar problem. I take it for granted, if they don't answer, it helped or fixed their problem. Otherwise, they'd still be asking, right? It's just kinda aggrevating. Everybody does it, at all the different forums I go to. I even ask at the end of the post, to let us know how it goes, and we STILL don't hear from them again.

Hi,

I agree completely and do also work three forums at the present and it is a problem all three places. One does not know if they even tried what you suggested and believe it or not, to know that something did not work is as important as knowing that it did work. Hope those who post will try to do better in this area.

Rockn........
I posted this here because this is the ONLY area of these forums that I post in. I've used macs for years, and figure I can help a few people that have problems with them. Since I post HERE, I was hoping that some people I have posted to, would see and read this!!!! Not everyone reads every section of the forums. I'm not gonna waste my time, reading the posts in areas that don't concern me. I've recently bought a pc with XP on it, and am still learning it. When I learn more about XP, I may post in that area too.

I totally agree that we NEED to know, if something doesn't work as well, as if it does. I mean, when you specifically ask them in the post, to let us know if it works or not, and they still won't tell you, then why do we (I) even bother to try and help? For all I know, I'm totally wasting my time, that could be better spent somewhere else!
The mods should make a "sticky" about this subject. It probably wouldn't help, but at least they would have tried.

I sympathize with your frustration, having experienced it more than once. However, I have decided that Steve Jobs (not the original author) was right: the journey is the reward.

We help because we can.

Thanks for your efforts, recognized or otherwise (note that unrecognized does not mean unappreciated). TSG needs more people willing to share whatever they have learned.

I'm not saying this for recognition.......... I just want to know if it helped or not. If what I suggest doesn't work, I don't want to keep passing along that same suggestion, for the same problem, to someone else with the same problem, a month from now, or to someone at another forum. Passing bad advice isn't good. I don't want a rep for bad information. I couldn't care less about recognition.......

A fair point -- but even if your advice turned out to be off the mark in a particular instance, that doesn't mean that it's bad advice -- just that it didn't happen to be the solution in this case (and there are plenty of times the problem description is overly general, misleading or missing essential elements that might influence the advice you provide).

As I said, I sympathize -- anyone who's posted advice here has had the same experience. Regardless of your motives, the TSG community appreciates your efforts.

Codejockey is correct. What works for one may not be the answer for another even if problems are similar. All you can do is understand your proposed fix is a sound procedure which has fixed other machines in the past and may or may not fix all! I guess what I am saying there is no magic bullet fix so many procedures may be deployed.
I too find it aggravating that people I help do not respond back to the help posting with results. In those cases where I am curious about the fix results I post back into the tread requesting a response from the person I have helped. This automatically sends an E-Mail to them. I have had people respond to my request immediately or sometimes as late as a month later!

Take care and keep up the good work!

Dave
