I compressed driveC: to make room for my grandkids games, now when I turn my computer on, it says error on drive C: cant read data, and that some files are missing, I run scan disk in DOS, it scan my host drive H: but runs out of memory when it scans C: My recovery disk, it will download the original files, but cant install them for some reason, I tried to format and install option, it says operation failed, system might not be operational, really needs help, thanks a lot

What version of DOS is this?

What kind of "recovery" disk are you talking about?

Try this - at boot, when you see "starting DOS" press F5 - this should dump you to a C prompt right away. Run SCANDISK now and see if it works.

thats exactly what I did, my computer was in safe mode, pressed shift+f5 and got command prompt, ran scandisk, it scanned host drive H: first, then ran out of memory when scanning c: My recovery disk is the one that came with my computer. I have a sone 200mgz pentium, 64 megs of ram, I messed up by trying to compress drive C: and not cant use my computer, and dont know what to do, I have a win95 boot disk but dont know how to use it, feel very stupid, thks for your time and consideration.

I think you are right that compression has messed up your drive. If I remember correctly compressing a drive swaps the drive letters, so the uncompressed data that is used to boot is on drive H. and C is your compressed drive. Unfortunately I think that the only thing you can now do is start over with Fdisk and format of C. If you use windows 95 try the search option at this site using FDISK WINDOWS 95 and search all forums and archives. You should find lots of information on how to Fdisk and get your operating system back. BOL

Above seems about right... Do you really need what is on this drive, or is wiping it out ok with you?

Boot with the 95 boot disk you have. At the A prompt type FDISK, and follow the menus to delete all partitions. Once done, hit ESC to exit, and reboot as it tells you to. Leave the 95 disk in there. Run FDISK again and choose Create Parition. When done, ESC to exit, and reboot with the recovery disk in.

It should do the rest.
