HI,

I have a power macintosh
5400/180 and when I start it up i get this,

a disk with a ? in it.

I started up the computer with the startup cd. When I look in the manual i should reinstall the system software.

It tells me to go to disk first aid and check my hard disk for any errors. I did that it seems to be okay.

Next it tell me to go to drive setup. It says in the list of drives, click your startup disk. There is only one thing there, <cd-rom drive> I can't update the driver from the functions menu.

What do i do?

That "?" signifies that the computer cannot find the startup disk, as you probably surmised. When you ran drive setup, what exactly was listed there? Do you have a utility repair program such as Norton Utilities? This is much more thorough at finding disk errors than the disk first aid that comes with your OS. It is possible that you may have to do a clean install of the OS.

when the computer is running off the CD is the Hard drive showing up on the desktop? it should show up even if the system software folder is corrupted and unable to boot.

im just making sure you arent actually disk doctoring the CD.

if u are sure the hard drive hasen't crashed or undergone some other hardware failure just try skipping the "update hard disk driver" step and continue the reinstall
(an aftermarket 3RD party drive may resist the disk driver utility).

try this and write back
Mike
