I am assuming from your wording that you have tried to adjust the sound using the control panel, making sure that the "mute" box is not checked. If this has not worked and you have checked speaker connections, then my guess is that the sound card might be either loose or bad.

I don't know how comfortable you are with opening the machine, but if you do, it should be simple to check the seating of the card.

This is a Mac G3 Beige desktop I'm not afraid of open the machine. The sound card is firmly mounted. Is their a fuse or reset on the board? Could this have been cause by brown power? The machine response as if the sound has been muted by it's blinking of the menu bar.

I think I may have found the answer. Apparently this is a known problem with G3s if the I/O card is seated improperly.

From the Apple site:

Properly reseating the I/O Card by removing it and reinserting it is often sufficient to correct the situation.

Alternatively, simply pressing down firmly on the card instead of removing it first may be enough. The I/O Card is secured to the inside rear panel by two screws on the top of the I/O Card fence, and by one screw on the outside, at the bottom of the card, next to the external DB-15 monitor port.

After reseating the card, a logic board reset is recommended, though not always necessary. To do so, press the small reset button next to the outermost PCI slot for approximately 2-3 seconds. Be aware that this will fully reset the Parameter RAM.

No such luck! Any other ideas outside of buying another I/O card. How do I know it is the I/O card and not something on the motherboard?

Have you taken steps to ensure that its not a speaker failure of some type. you know if any minijack is inserted in the sound out port than the internal speaker is disabled. or if the external speakers failed then the machine might appear silent or maybe the internal speaker wire came loose

just some thoughts since a bad card seems remote (but possible)
