I have a mac g3 with system 8.6..using myrealbox.com as my smtp mail server with Netscape. Suddenly last month could no longer send smtp mail (either get error messages such as uuable to connect to site or system just hangs up). Wrote to their technical many times but no help. checked all preferences and settings and found no problem. Can log on to their site and send mail but want ability back of sending email withut logging on.
They said something about smtp authentication not turned on but I never heard of this on a mac...is there a way to turn it on an off? Any suggestions for getting us working? (by the way incomming mail works fine).

Under Edit> Preferences> mail and newsgroups> mail servers, there is a place for the outgoing mail username... That what it will try to authenticate with on the SMTP server. It should ask you for the password...

Thank you.this I knew this and have outgoing server filed with "smtp.myrealbox.com" as before, but it never even gets to authentication. Got me stumped..I'm thinking a conflict but TechTool pro doesn't pick it up.

there should be nothing in the space outgoing mail username, if they have SMTP auth. Blank it out, or contact your ISP to find out what should be in there

Thank you again .. Still not working but here's some further info.set up account exactly as described on site (http://192.108.102.201:82/57.htm) tried without name but what still happens. outgoing mail hangs and then we get message such as, "Netscape's Network connection was refused by the server. The server may not be accepting ...." This is type of message we've been getting since mid December...before that it worked fine. Also when we log on we have no problems.

Have not tried any other...want to continue to use Netscape Messenger..note that we have been in contact with the tech person at myrealbox but he is more a PC than mac person. He says no problem at their end. His best thought is that my ISP is blocking port 25 which has something to do with "telnet" but doesn't know how to resolve that on mac. Don't know if this will solve it but don't know how to unblock or chage this port (and to what port do I change it)..will trashing my Netscape preferences delete it? For convenience I prefer to use Netscape email and not a sperate program.
