Ipod Erased
I have a 15 gig Ipod, windows system

About a week ago I was tranferring songs from Itunes to my Ipod. My computer froze up a couple times and ITunes shut down. I didnt think much of it, turned my computer off, unhooked the Ipod, even though it said "do not disconnect", then plugged it into the charger. Later on, I took it in the car to play some tunes and there was NOTHING on it. 2000 songs gone. I plugged it into the computer, when I did that Itunes opened up but it said it could not locate the ipod and to restore it to factory settings - which i know for sure will erase it. And I looked around on the Ipod a bit to find out that the space taken up is something like 8 gigs - so I am thinking my music is still there somewhere!! Do you know how to recover it? Also, if I update the Ipod and ITunes with the newest software - will it erase any songs that may be on there? Unfortunately, I never backed up my songs.
Any help would be appreiciated! Thanks!
