I have a need to undelete files from a Windows 95 hard drive. A co-worker has a nifty little Emergency Undelete utility, but it only works on NT 4.0 systems. Can someone please direct me toward something that will work for me? Thanks!

If they aren't in the recycle bin, there
is a program called REVIVAL that works
well in Win95.

You can also try DOS UNDELETE:
Boot for DOS, type LOCK, go to the directory
where you lost them (cd\whatever), and type

undelete *.*

This only works 1 file at a time, and you'll
be prompted for the first letter of the filename.
Also, if you've done much on your computer since
you deleted the files, their info may be already
overwritten, but this is true of any undelete
program. Good luck...

I looked for an UNDELETE executable before I posted, but was unable to locate. Is it significant to boot to DOS to access this command. I've never heard of a LOCK command. Thanks for your input, I will give it a try.

Is REVIVAL shareware or a purchased program?

"Undelete" is in the DOS OS, you won't find it
as a separate executable.
"Lock" removes protection from the hard drive
allowing DOS utilities like "undelete" to
do stuff to the fat/file system.
The system will hang if you try "Lock" from
a DOS box in Windows, so booting to DOS is
necessary. Windows will reset it again when
you boot back to Windows.

Almost forgot - Revival is shareware, but
SW will only do 1 file and takes a while to
recheck your whole drive again. I'd try
undelete first.

I appreciate your help Mac. No problem in booting system to DOS and executing LOCK command, but system would not accept UNDELETE *.* command. Responded with 'bad command or file name'. I ensured I had a path to C:\windows\command (thinking it was a pathing problem), but this did not seem to resolve. Also tried UNDEL *.* as well as HELP /? (smile). Any suggestions?

I'm hoping I'm not chasing rabbits. The files I want to attempt to recover were in a desktop folder...

OOPS - I have goofed. Undelete IS an executable,
I had forgot where I put it. Judging from the
file date, I kept it over from DOS 6.20 when I
went to Win95. I apologize. Looks like Revival
or another recovery tool may be your best bet
here, unless you have access to an older system.
