Hiya

I am just learning about DOS..gotta learn sometime. Anyway, I typed in VER and it said 4. Considering that we are upto 6.2, I think, should I upgrade?

Also, when I type in EDIT and press return on a C prompt, I go to a blue screen. What does this part do and how on earth do you get to the menus at the top?

Thank you in advance

Talking DOS
Well my opinion on upgrading versions is that if there is no problem with the current version, let it be until it is necessary to upgrade it. A far as the edit command and the blue screen, you use that screen to create files in DOS (I have used it to create an autoexec.bat & a config.sys file for a boot disk). You get to the menu's at top by pressing the "Alt" key, and then move around with the arrow keys. Hope I have been somewhat helpful.

Hi eddie5659
If you are just running DOS (not windows). Go ahead and upgrade. As long as you are learning DOS you might as well learn the newer one.

If you got the version number from a DOS prompt in windows 98, I would not try to upgrade it as it is reporting the version of windows you have not the DOS version. I guess that what they mean when they say 98 does not have a separate version of DOS installed.

to get to the menus at the top.... hit the alt key and hit f for the file menu... hit e for edit menu... etc.

you can also use the arrow key to navigate once you have a menu open.

Thanks for the replies.

I used the Dos by restarting in Dos. Is this the same as going in via the prompt? I use Windows98 on the same machine but I am trying to go for my A+, and there is a small bit about Dos in the exam.

regards

Hi eddie5659
It's still windows 98 DOS don't attempt upgrading!
The msdos from the prompt is dos running inside a window. Windows 98 is still running in the background. When you restart in dos mode only DOS is running.

Thanks, I won't.

If I get stuck later on I'll post here again.
