Question GPS for PDA
I've been combing the net getting more and more confused the last two days! I'm a community based therapist at an agency that doesn't seem to understand the need for making the internet availabe for getting accurate directions. Last October, I won a Dell Axim X5 in a drawing--I rarely use it, but I think its time for the device to earn its keep by converting to a portable GPS unit.
Pharos sells a GPS kit for the Axim X5 that I've been looking at--but I was hoping to connect with someone who has done this before or at least understands the setup a lot more than I do at the moment. Would I need anything other than the receiver and software?
Or, on the other hand, would it be easier to enable Wi-Fi on the PDA? Is that possible?
Any help at all would be appreciated! Thanx!!

With GPS the recievers come in a few flavors. First off think if you want it teathered or non teathered. if you don't want a cord you will want to use something like bluetooth. Once you have the receiver decided on you can use a number of software packages to map the GPS signal. Tom Tom, Garmin, and a few others are big ones.

As far as using Wifi for GPS I am not sure.

basically your correct in thinking you need the hardware and the software.

I've seen a few receivers by Pharos that just clip into the bottom of the device. I think one of the biggest things I'm confused about is whether the pocket pc needs to be internet inabled prior to having any of the gps stuff. Right now--it has the software to connect to the internet--but no hardware. Would it need more than just the receiver and software?

The company that makes the device would be the best people to ask. GPS devices that need to connect to a PDA are not very popular, and you could wait a long time to find answers here.

EDIT: From what I read on www.pharosgps.com, it looks like the clip-on device contains the antenna, so the device doesn't need to be wifi-enabled.

Most all GPS solutions don't require WiFi. Even the software to connect to the internet for most PDA's can be done via the cradle apssthrough on your home PC I.E. downloading new maps and whatnot.
