bootable disk for 98
Hi, I am wondering if the files that need to be copied are all in the same place for win98 and win98SE?

I am pretty sure that on win 98 c:windows\command the files are

io.sys
command.com
sys.com
fdisk.exe
format.com
scandisk.exe
attrib.exe
config.sys
autoexec.bat

and in c:windows defrag.exe is located (at least that is what I was told). If I am wrong please let me know.

When I look on win98 SE machine c:windows\command the files I found

sys.com
fdisk.exe
format.com
scandisk.exe
attrib.exe

Where are
io.sys
command.com
defrag.exe
autoexec.bat
config.sys

I can't find them on 98SE. Can someone please help me out?

I appreciate any help.

TIA

io.sys
command.com
autoexec.bat
config.sys

would be in the c:\windows\command\ebd directory. If you chose not to create an EBD (Emergency Boot Disk) while installing windows, this directory will not be present.

defrag.exe should be in c:\windows.

Using sys.com will place the io.sys, msdos.sys, and command.com files on the boot media target.

Note that the above autoexec.bat and config.sys files are meant for a boot floppy, not the hard disk. When windows is loaded, these files are generally empty on the hard disk.

I've got to get to work. Post back if you need further information.

FYI, you can't just copy the boot files to the root of a disk and hope to boot. Try using the SYS command to create the bootable drive.

Perhaps if you told us what you're trying to do, we could be more helpful.

When you create a Floppy bootdisk, you can put the system files on it in two ways. When you format the disk or after.

format a: /s
That will transfer the system files after it formats the floppy.

If you forgot that switch when formatting then you can do:
sys a:

I guess it is good to know these things for legacy support but support for Windows 98 is going bye bye and I believe most people will move to a newer version of Windows eventually and these things will be obsolete.

I don't even bother anymore with making my own bootdisks. I just download one from Bootdisk.com or Allbootdisks.com. I usually already have one of those downloaded to my hard drive or USB drive.
