If a moderator will remove the previous post,
I'd appreciate it. Apparently if you preview a
post, it dumps your file attachment...

OK, I'd love to post Microsoft's help file that in
times past came with DOS, but I really don't want
to get into an argument with Bill Gates over it.

So, I've done about the best I can. I've created
a batch file that will use your DOS help info and
route the results to a text file. It covers most of
the commands, but there are some that I didn't
include, and some that may not be available in
later versions of Windows. If anyone wants to
update and repost the batch file, please feel free
to do so. I named it "DOSmakehelp.txt" so I can
attach it.

I've attached the file (DOSmakehelp.txt) to this
post. Save it to C:\ then rename the file to
"DOSmakehelp.bat". Go to a DOS prompt and type:

DOSmakehelp

Then press the ENTER key. It will show onscreen:

"File C:\doshelp.txt created."

when it's finished.

Basically, it runs various DOS commands with the
"/?" parameter, then outputs to a text file named
doshelp.txt on the root dir of your C: drive. You can
then view doshelp.txt with any text editor.

If you see "bad command or filename" under a DOS
command in the file, it means you don't have that
command available. This DOES NOT cover device
drivers and commands used in the config.sys file.

Running this file should not cause any problems on
your computer. If for any reason the batch file hangs,
press CTRL+C to stop it. I've run it several times on
my system to test it.

Points of interest:
- MSCDEX claims the "/?" parameter is illegal, but
still shows the usage (if you have MSCDEX).
- DOSKEY insists on showing its' info one page at
a time, so I piped it a "y" to make it continue the
display.

Have fun...

Hey that was mine!
Hi Mac.

I wrote almost the exact same batch about a year ago because we had some users where I work who could never recall certain things about DOS. You can open the text files in Notepad with:

start notepad myfile.txt

Or better yet, give the option for a hard copy and send to the default printer by:

start notepad /P myfile.txt

Hey mole,

Well, THIS one wasn't yours...

If I'd known you had one it would've
saved me a lot of typing though...

Cheers, Mac

I can't type
Every now and then I look at the number of batchfiles in my c:\bat directory and shake my head....all that typing.
