Question Solved: reorganizing a computer
I am new here so I don't know if I am in the correct forum so please bear with me.

I have just bought a new computer and am truying to set up my old one as a dos operated system.
I finally got it to recognize drive D but it couldn't read it. I figured that this was because drive D wasa DVD rewriter. I removed it and it now has it's original cd-rom, but, since I removed the DVD the coomputer will not boot up. It tuns on but, appareently, doesn't read the dos program. It starts to beep loudly and will contine to beep as long as I l;eave it on. Any Ideas?

If you said you are booting up with DOS (I can't tell if that is what you said), DOS can not read a CD or DVD drive without some help, in the form of some special drivers. At least you can try using the drivers on a "Win98 Startup" floppy.

Beeps coming from a PC, at turn on, can mean many different things. You might have cabling problems, memory problems, or even power supply problems. You are not specific enough to let us help you.

Dos
I put a DOS program on the computer. I also loaded cd-rom drivers. The program recognized the cd-rom drive but couldn't read from it. I figured that was because the drive was a dvd rewriter so I removed the dvd. Now the computer won't boot.

Your comments probably hit the nail on the head anyway as it appears to be a strapping/ power problem or some such thing.

Thank you for your help I guess it is something that one needs to be able to examine to find the problem.

Recognized? What do you mean when you say "The program recognized the cd-rom drive but couldn't read from it."

Recognized, to me, means it can read from it. Just being able to change the DOS prompt to "D:" does not mean that the OS can "recognize" the drive there; only that it does not 'choke' by you changing the drive letter.

If your computer truly recognizes the CD drive, it would be able to read it.
Also, if you get into your BIOS setup, your setup information there will probably tell you the make and model number of the hard drives and CD or DVD drives installed. Most BIOS routines can tell you that now. Seeing that info there tells you that you have power and that the cable is plugged in properly.

The CD drivers that get installed via the usual Win98 startup disks would not be able to read a DVD drive. Those are DVD drivers needed, not CD drivers - close, but no cigar.

If you have only changed the DVD to a CD, and now you are getting 'beeps' I would think that you have plugged something in wrong.

Thanks again ChuchE. When trying to change drives I was getting the D: prompt but when I triued to use it I got a message, "Not ready reading from drive D." So once again, you make sense.

I am thinking that I have plugged something in incorrectly. I will get someone to have a look.

Mate, I really appreciate you trying to help me. Thanl you.
