Question Modified Dos Files
Hello, is there any way to recover files that were modified in lotus 3.1. I recently tried to copy a file from a very ancient computer to a floppy, but the floppy drive was bad. Somehow I modified all the files in lotus concering that certain file. I cant use the tag program that we used to use, because the print files are modified. I had a tech come in, and he could not figure it out, said since it was dos based, he didnt think I could recover the old files. Is it possible to recover them? Or am I just outta luck?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup...or were using an ancient utility like PCTools Unerase, Norton Unerase (basically the same thing) then there isn't a way to recover the lost files.

Just to double check...the files were deleted from the hard drive, right?

Ah-ha! PCTools may be of some help...most of the versions had an unerase utility that could unerase DOS files. It was relatively effective...and...it's worth a shot. :-)

Try launching the main PCTools application (it's been so many years, I cannot recall the exact name of the file...)
It lists all the utilities that are included with PCTools...and the unerase utility is hopefully one of them.

re: pc tools
Just went back to the old computer to take a look. It has pc tools 8.0 went into that, and it has an undelete function, but it is shaded out, so I cant select it. Was looking in the help section and it says to undelete files, to do this from the dos prompt by typing undel.exe. Goin to try this in a few min. Thanks again

Question pc tools
well, unfortuately, the files were only modified, not deleted. so that function will not work. there is a cp backup function on there, and I do have a set of discs that are numbered cpbackup 001,002,003..Should I try putting them in? Or is there any other way in that program to un-modify files? Thanks again

Right on! It can't hurt to check out what the contents of the CPBackup disks are. First though, I'd make a backup of your existing data (if it's of any value to you). Then, try using PCTools restore to restore the backed up data overwriting your existing Lotus data. You should be able to look at the contents of the "backup set" before restoring the files. It should contain the date of the backup so you can determine if the data is useful.
