Print sharing in a mixed network
I know absolutely nothing about Macs, but I managed to network a friend's house, where they have three PCs (Win98 and WinMe) and one iMac (O/S 8something, I believe). Since the iMac had a printer attached to it, they weren't interested in giving the Mac access to the Epson printer the other three share. Now, however (yep), the Mac's printer is on the fritz, and they need to have that machine share the other printer.

Since they didn't want to run RJ45 cabling over 3 stories, and since the house is very old, with the wall masonry plastered onto a metal mesh, we had to use one of those phone system routers (Linksys -- ugh) rather than wireless. (Linksys just laughed at me when I said "Mac," so I used a Farallon USB card to get the iMac onto the phoneline network. That works fine.) All four are able to access the internet through the router, and the three PCs are able to use the one printer.

However, I need to know the step-by-step instructions for getting the iMac to be able to see and use the Epson. (I told them where to find the Mac drivers for it, so they're set with that.) Being from the Intel world, I have absolutely no idea where to go from here, especially since I'm doing this all by email (they live halfway across the state, so going there is not an option.)

Can anyone help this Mac newbie?

Thanks!!!

The only reliable way to network printers over multi OS is to use one of the folowing

1. A print server - requires RJ45 and a hub

2. Dave - Cross Platform network software

3. PC-Mac Lan - Cross Platform network software

Here is step by step instructions on how to connect your mac to printer via tcp/ip.

1. Go to Mac hardrive > apple extras > Apple Laserwriter Software > Desktop Printer utility. (you should have desktop printer utility if not its not hard to find )

2. Double click desktop printer utility
3. Select Printer (LPR) then click the "OK" button
4. This screen will ask you to select a PPD file you can either leave it as "generic" or press the "Change" button and select the appropriate printer ie. HP 4000
5. The lower half of the same screen will ask you to select LPR Printer Selection. Click the change button.
6. The next pop up window will ask for the printers IP address. FIll in the appropriate address then press "OK"
7. Next select "create" on the lower right.
8. Name the printer whatever you want
9. Test page
10. DONE!!!! CONGRATS.

Hope that helps, get back to me if it works or doesnt work.
