Question Cable Modem Dropping On MAC - Help
HI....... Have a question for all you MAC users out there. I have been having a problem with my G4 and external cable modem. Things will be running fine for several hours and then my modem will kick off and recycle itself. Although I get good connection and speed, it is annoying to have the modem restart itself. I have called the technicians from my local cable provider and they have come to the house and checked my line for noise and forward/return signals. They all seem to be in order. The cable provider has my settings such that it pulls down an IP number automatically when I am up and running and they dont assign static IP's. The techs have looked at all my settings and they appear to be correct however they have admitted they have little experience in MAC's as only a couple of their customers have them. I and they are kind of at a loss as to what to do. Anyone else experience this kind of connectivity problem with cable modems??? By the way I have a G4 with OS 8.0.....

Thanks

Eric

Even though most cable providers prefer not to assign a static IP address, they can if you keep after them. When you call, ask to speak to a supervisor and explain that you are having connection problems that they are unable to resolve, and that you want to try a static IP address to see if that cures your problem.

It sounds as if you lose your connection whenever they reset the DHCP server, so a static IP address might help...
