Smile Windows 3.1 dail-up program?
I have an ancient labtop equiped with Windows 3.1, and according to my not-a-computer-expert-but-thinks-he-is uncle it does have a modem and is internet ready, although nothing would actually run quickly on it.

Obviously, I don't expect to run internet explorer or outlook express on this thing (Plus the LCD monitor doesn't do images well ). But I could telnet on it, methinks. I haven't been able to find out how to connect with it though. Could someone tell me if there is a dail up program in Windows3.1, and what it is?
Thanks.

"Terminal.exe" is Windows 31's native dial-up program....look to see if you have it installed.

I found terminal.exe, but could't get it running. I had to specify a COM port but the modem doesn't seem to be -on- a COM port. Any ideas?

If I remember correctly (been a while since 3.1), ISP software for Windows 3x came with a full dialup program that would detect your modem etc., and all you did was fill in the blanks.

Has your uncle ever actually been online with this computer?
I thought the older laptops required an external modem or a modem card...

Cheers, Mac

Hehheh...no

I thought it had an internal modem; There's a spot for a phone line by the disk drive. If I had a digital camera, I'd take a pic of it. Sadly, I don't

Well, I'm not a laptop expert. You might run MSD.EXE (Microsoft's old diagnostic program), it will show something about your comports (I think). It should be either in the Windows directory (folder) or the DOS directory.

Otherwise, I'd search on the internet for a modem test program that works in Win 3.1 or DOS.

Hopefully somebody else has a better idea. Good luck.

Cheers, Mac

msd.exe showed a device on one COM port (the mouse) and a device on one LPT port (I'm guessing the modem.) Terminal.exe doesn't work with LPT ports, so I'm going to look for another dailup program.

I've never heard of a modem on an LPT port, that's why TERMINAL.EXE needs a COM port (but I'm not a laptop expert, remember? ).

If there really is a modem on the LPT port, you might find dialup software at NEC's website specifically for that setup.

BTW, I'd also post in HARDWARE about this, I think more folks hang around there...

Cheers, Mac
