Dos help
We have 2 comuters connected to a server.
Computers: Windows XP Professional
Server: Windows Server 2003

We have an old Dos accounting software on the server. No problems with it, until we had to replace 1 computer. Now I can not access the Dos program with the new computer.

Error: RCF.FIL not found.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

I doubt you'll get much help here, since most people have moved on from MS DOS. I'd personally get a new accounting software, or contact a guy who really knows MS DOS, but most people don't, so don't expect much help from this form, I'd ask a computer specialist.

Try using DOSBox (www.dosbox.com) - it's an open-source DOS emulator that I've used to run various DOS programs before.

Direct link to the download of the Windows version (via SourceForge): http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosb...r.exe/download

How did you re-install the client software on the New PC?
If you just copied the program folders, you may have missed some files that were stored in the system folder for the particular OS it was designed to work with.
Is this a pure DOS program, or was it designed to work with Win 3.x,Win9x, WinNT or later?
For MS-DOS there may have been files added to the C:\DOS folder
For Win 3.X - Windows\System
For Win9x - Program Files\Common Files, Windows\Command, Windows\System
For WinNT - Program Files\Common Files, Windows\System32
Is the file really missing? If so, copy the missing file from the working PC to the same location on the non-working PC.

Check the PATH statement on both to make sure they match. You'll need to compare the autoexec.nt and config.nt files (In Windows\System32) on both systems as well.

Thanks so much for the help.

The software is installed on the server. And yes it is a pure DOS program. Copyright 1985. I have been trying for years to get the boss to buy an updated program. We are slightly behind the times here. I have not been able to find anybody localy that could help, so I appreciated every ones imput.

I'm very surprised that an accounting program from 85 still works. I would expect that accounting and tax laws have changed between 85 and 2009 and that it would no longer produce the correct results.

Anyway, I think your problem might be related to the PATH in dos. PATH was the order in which DOS searched the directories on the hard drive for a particular file. Just typing PATH <enter> in a dos box will show you the current path

First, locate the RCF.FIL file. Check which directory it is in.
Second: check if this directory is in your path.
Third: if it is not, add the directory to your path or place a copy of RCF.FIL in a directory that is in the path.
