I need help.In my haste to complete a reload of windows, I forgot to save my data before fdisking and formatting.I had saved a folder to my desk top with all of my data in it, but forot to burn a cd of it .I did delete and create the partion, and the machine was 10% into the format process, when I stopped it. Can I recover my data and how do I do it?
I have heard of Roxio GoBack software, but I do not want to buy something that will not help me.Please help I have two little girls who are upset that their Dad deleted their pictures, let alone all of my own data.

Hi there!

First off...My condolences on your error!

If that data was CRITICAL, there is a way to get it...but you will pay through the nose to get it back.

What you will need to do is take the hard drive into a "Data Recovery Center". they have special tools and such to recover what you lost...EVEN AFTER AN FDISK AND FORMAT.

The cost is what you'll need to check out...that type of data recovery is very exspensive and it's an "All or Nothing" deal.

many people think that FDISK and Fomatting erases data.
FDISK barely erases any and formatting merely marks the secters of your hard disk "writable".


Fortunately I've never had that problem,but if you can boot, maybe something like one of these will help.(I would like some feedback from Sexytech or someone else who knows).They may be worthless,likely.

First - don't boot the drive at all.
Second - how knowlegeable are you about computers?
There are many ways to do this - do you have a second HD which you can use - or a secon computer on which you can mount the drive as a slave?
It's really not that difficult and there are a variety of programs which will get if for you - IF you're really knowledgeable it can even be done with debug - but if you accidentally overwrite (easier to do than you think (particularly old erassed fat entries) then it will become beyond the average person's ability to recover.

get norton utilities- has an excellent program for recovering data.

2. if possible reinstall os, norton to a second drive- could be wrong but i believe the more the disk gets written- rewritten to the greater the chance the old data will be unrecoverable..-

yeah then get notron utilities, put on the other pc, set up original disk as a slave disk on second pc, let norton scan it and see what it can find-

I do feel comfortable around computers, as I have built the 3 that I currently have running in my home.I just would like some guidance as to what software to use and maybe some tips on how to use it.I have an identical machine to the one in question ,so installing the formatted drive as a slave is no problem.Thanks again

I think that L&F is not what you want here - perhaps several days and a lot of HD space avail.

Try this one (it's not what I use - but this is free )

Install it to the good PC and then slave the formatted HD to that PC.
(under no circumstances should windows be allowed to scandisk or reformat etc. the drive - particularly watch out for auto scandisk after a bad shutdown)
If after a run through the disk - you don't like what you see - then don't commit any writes to the formatted drive (assuming that is an option - you'll probably have the required room on the good drive?) and I'll find you something else.

Well to keep everyone informed.Lost and Found, not only found all of my data, but recovered everything from the entire harddrive.If needed you could rebuild an entire drive from the data that this program is able to recover.It scanned my entire drive in under an hour and overnight recovered almost 6 gigs of data from my partioned and formatted harddrive.I would highly recommend it to any one with a similiar problem.
