Question Win98se Computer bootup time is Tickin me off!
Hi.
Ive been reading the forum here for about a week now. Im impressed! So, I joined in hopes that someone here can help????

Ive posted on several other forums, but so far. No one has taken the challenge.

Im running win98se
512 ram
1000 MHZ

I have several problems, but I know that is all boils down the one small thing. I JUST DONT KNOW IT! And its driving me bonkers!

When I boot up, all goes well, until the Windows welcome screen. From there, its an eternity. It takes as long as my old PB used to. Which is now, DEAD. (RIP)

I used the skip driver agent, and its showing that there is a problem at:

"DSC\DISK\0000USB&VID_0D7D&PID_0100&072313080181

The reference for theis problem is:
DSC\DISK\0000USB&VID_0D7D&PID_0100&072313080181

Try upgrading the device drivers for this hardware or changing the resources the device is using."

Also, about 1.5 yrs ago, I installed a logitech webcam. Shortly after rebooting, It started this problem: I would get tiny veritcal lines (blue) along the top of the screen. When booting. It would freeze at my desktop. If I press ctrl, alt, del it shows that windows hasnt loaded. It wont restart with ctrl alt del, so i have to turn it off manually.

Then sometimes, it would beep 5 or 6 times, (i cant remember the number of beeps offhand) but when it did it again, I did count them, and found out that it signaled a video problem. I posted to forums, and no answers.

Sometimes, it would set off the beeps, like, whenever I moved my computer. If I pulled it away from the wall (to clean) and then push it back, it would beep. Pull it away, it wouldnt. Put it back against the wall, it would. If I move the wire, it would stop it. I took out the video card, and reseated it. Still does it, but not as often, of course, Ive given up on cleaning behind the desk now too.

If I dont use the pc for a while, it would make a noise (similar to grinding sound - but not). Sometimes one to three tries to get it started. Once in a great while, 10 times or more.

On top of all of this, I had a mishap last summer. I spilled coffee on my cordless keyboard. Nothing happened, at least not right away!

I left the room for a few secs to get a towel, and when I came back, the screen was going haywire! I saw the CMOS SCREEN, numbers, letters and what have you.

I got scared and couldnt seem to hit the esc key (actually i didnt know what to do), by this time, it dawned on my to pull the power cord.

After I gained my composure, I changed the keyboard back to the old one, and crossed my fingers as I turned it back on.
All was well, I thought.
Everynow and then, I think about that day, and wonder, could I have changed an order of something around? It must have happened, because in my readings of the forums, one lady had answered me, and told me to change the boot order of C. I did, and that shaved about 30secs off the startup!

I know, I shouldve written a book, eh?

I reformatted, january 31, 03 hoping that would have fixed something. It didnt. I added another 256ram about 2 weeks ago. Still runs slow. I dont have anything but, explorer, systray, my firewall (sygate), and antivirus running. right now. I had my printer disabled from startup but when I did that, it refused to work, so, now I ctrl alt to shut it down.

The computer was built for me by a friend, but, he is no longer alive. So, asking him to fix it is out of the question. Its been a pain since day 1.

I got a program called FreshUI, and installed it. Benchmarks also.

There are more questions Id like to ask, but if this hasnt scared anyone away, Ill ask those questions later. Hope Someone can help me. I dont know DOS, or win ini or bats. So please, be gentle?

Kix

So what i wanted to know is can someone help me find out what could be the problem?

Are there any old programs left on the pc that you no longer use ? If so clean it up as windows may be looking for drivers that are no longer there.

Try this link as well. have you defragged ? Be sure to check for updated drivers. check for old programs in add/remove programs.

as well you can use Reg cleaner to remove any old programs.

regedit
well, i used regedit, got rid of a lot of old programs i found floating around. im not too sure about the dma suggestino from the page you suggested, i guess when i find out if my hardware suppports that option, ill try it.

also, still askin google to lead me to answers, and i stumbled onto this. do you think this will help me in identifying my drivers, obsolete or not?

i used freshdevices for this before, but, after i installed this one, it leads me right to the homepages of my installed hardware.

Let's see what all you have loading at start up. Go to http://lurkhere.com/~nicefiles and download HiJackThis. Use Winzip to unzip it, then install and run it. When it's done the "Scan" button changes to "Save Log". Save the log file it creates (it should open in Notepad at that point) Copy and past the results in your next post.

Hi Kix ...In regards to drivers , the ones i would check in particular are sound and video as they are known offenders to slow down bootup.
did you get a log from the hijack this program as suggested by nighthawk ? i'm not real familiar with reading those but someone will.

"DSC\DISK\0000USB&VID_0D7D&PID_0100&072313080181"
This appears to be from a digital camera of some sort.

You have Spybot installed, but is it up to date - the newest one has an updater in it - http://spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=all#s-p

Do you have a Network card? If you do and aren't using it it can add several seconds of time to the boot process and this can be easily fixed by assigning it a fixed IP address.

Also check your bios - is UDMA enabled for the harddrives? Are the optimal settings being used in the bios or Failsafe?

Also make sure you have the latest chipset drivers installed. This will enable DMA acces on your harddrive and increase performance. Aida should tell you the chipset - ie VIA, Intel.

Next go into Safe Mode and go into device manager - I think you may find an unknown device or a driver for a USB camera - check under USB Controllers for disabled devices - remove any thing you no longer have or that shows an error.

Also go into RUN and type MSCONFIG. There's a few things you can uncheck to make it run faster. For example Autoexec.bat and config.sys can be unchecked - these are really only needed for DOS. Then go into STARTUP and uncheck wkdetect and dxm6patch. If Incredimail is in startup remove it too.

Also go into Add/Remove program and uninstall any software that you don't use.
