This is a very frustrating problem. Untill recently, for about three or four months I had some pesty trojan viruses, they messed up a good deal of files but nothing too important. However, one day in November I couldn't use my computer anymore at all, it came up with the blue screen when trying to start up normally which stated that there has been a Windows Protection Error.
Through the use of another computer at a relative's house I found the solution of going into msconfig and selecting Force Compatibility Mode in the Advanced controls, as well as EMM Exclude A000-FFFF and Disable UDF File System. Now, when using the computer in this state, of course...it's in compatibility mode.
I'm not sure if that is why my computer has the yellow ******* tag of non-working-ness on the Primary and Secondary IDE hard disk controllers, as well as the floppy disk controller, but well, I have that issue as well........meaning I can't use things like my scanner or printer, etc, which is a very big issue, and something I need resolved as soon as possible.
Turning off Compatibility Mode in msconfig results in the Windows Protection Error message again, meaning I can only run Windows in Safe Mode. Well, that's no fun now is it?
I'm running Windows ME. Before this, I never had a single problem other than something my dad caused while playing a game on here, something HP computers seem to have a problem with, but I got all that fixed myself except for the CD-R drive.
If anyone can help me out....that would be insanely appreciated. Thankyou so much in advance.
Happy New Year..

I'd lose many, many important files. I make music on my computer, and i'm also a guitarist and I have hundreds of riffs recorded in wav format etc etc etc. There's just too much stuff I would lose if I just reinstall ME | | Distinguished Member with 17,880 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2001 Location: Mexico of the North, MN Experience: Disenfranchised American Male | | Reinstalling Windows would be the best option if a virus has corrupted system files, etc. If you don't have backups of your important files you will lose them eventually...it's inevitable...hard drives fail. If this is a working computer I would suggest a fresh install of Windows, buy a seondary hard drive, possibly external just for work files and never store anything other than programs on the C drive. Another thing to do is create an image file of your C drive when you have it set up the way you want it with all of your programs and utilities. If anything like this ever happens again just reinstall your image and you are up and running again in minutes.
If you are getting indications of an IDE controller error your motherboard may be going bad as well.

There must be something I can do. If only I could use the CD-R drive and copy the files to discs, there'd be no problem with reinstalling ME....however, I don't even know if it's because of the IDE controller problem or not, but I can't do that.
Please someone try to help me... | | Distinguished Member with 17,880 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2001 Location: Mexico of the North, MN Experience: Disenfranchised American Male | | I didn't say it was hopeless did I. And you also weren't listening that if the hard drive or motherboard controller go bad you music is history regardless. If you have access to another computer you can take your current drive out, add it as a slave and copy your "important" files to another form of media or another hard drive. Then you can concentrate on diagnosing the problems with your main PC. Check your warranties as you may be able to het it repared for free.
Once you get it fixed I would also suggest getting a more stable OS like Windows 2000 and some methid of backing up your files.

And they ARE important to ME. | | Senior Member with 1,192 posts. | | Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: WA | | So if you Turn off Compatibility Mode in MSConfig, but you select , selective startup and you uncheck all the options and then reboot to normal mode, do you still have the same issue? | | Junior Member with 19 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: Alabama, USA | | Are you able to get to your Desktop.. if so you can do a WinME re-installation over the old and still keep you settings and installed programs. Key note, this ONLY works if you can boot up into windows desktop!!, insert the winME disk and run installation. Other wise get your hands on another HD and put it as a Secondary Slave to save all your music and other files you want to keep. Then do as other here have suggested and redo windows. Hope this helps.. | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
