[SOLVED] SYSTEM INI Problem
System, W98SE crashed & I had to run restore disk to get it back up & running. Lost many programs & have all going fine now, except problems with Norton A/V. I had Norton 2002 disc & upgraded online each year thru 2005. I cannot reinstall it & get it to work, so I have been using Pc cillin. Norton was uninstalled & files for it deleted.
Problem is,,,, when I boot , it stops on a screen that says;

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or an application. At the bottom is;
C:\Progra"1\Symantec\SymeVnt.36

Click any key to continue. Computer works fine after I click but would like to get rid of that screen. If I install the old Norton A/V 2002 disc that I have, I suddenly cannot access any website. Thanks!

Please see this Link to remove Symantec from your computer.
http://www.webnme.com/AntiVirus.asp
You can also go into Your REGISTRY to EDIT / FIND/ type in SYMANTEC , and delete what it finds.

Esteban:

Look in the SYSTEM.INI file and you will probably find the SYMEVNT.386 command listed there. Type a semi-colon( ; ) in front of it, save the change and close the file, then reboot.

Do a find/search and get rid of all file and registry references to Symantec and Norton.

Thanks for the replies & I am sorry to be late answering you. I tried what both of you suggested & cannot find any files for Symantec, Norton, etc on the computer. I uninstalled everything as per the link above. Yep,,, it still is there. Any other suggestions??

Go to Start > Run and type: regedit

Go to the View or Edit or whatever menu in 98 has "Find".

Find symevnt.386 and delete it. Press F3 to continue searching and delete every reference to that file that is found. Repeat until you are notified that you have searched the entire registry.

These errors in 98 are always mistaken when they suggest that the error is in system.ini.

You're welcome. Not an unusual problem in 98.
